GALERIA DE SENTIMIENTOS PARA UNA DESPEDIDA
A gallery of feelings for a farewell is an accumulation of actions to let go.
Teary eyes, many hands waving goodbye, flowers swaying, generating new sounds in the chest, and others that are kept safe in an act that simulates parting.
You wonder if art is capable of expressing that strength in the face of helplessness, or if psychiatry has created methods to control it… yes, perhaps fulfilling the tradition of the life cycle through a traditional social action helps us feel better.
An emotion is usually experienced as a particular mental state, sometimes accompanied by physiological changes, expressions, and actions. Regarding the pain caused by the death of a loved one, we are told:
YOU MUST BREATHE TO AVOID CRYING
It's curious, because NOT BREATHING PROPERLY has meant NOT GETTING INFECTED so we don't die when we're healthy, but when we're sick, BREATHING is the only act that could save us from death and pain.
I then turn to art to understand and accept without question the spaces of each word and action that we cannot understand, clinging to our customs to navigate this unprecedented farewell together.
And faced with this need to silently close something, I have created a relational piece between being able to "do that" as therapy and the magic of the Illas, this custom in our culture that propagates life.
I BURY – I SOW
The creation of each piece using the felting technique begins with an intentional process of formation. The gesture of pricking, widely used in Vodou culture, is often associated with harm; however, this act also signifies the creation of a connection between the magical world and reality. The ILLAS represent intermediaries, and each one carries within it a seed, an invitation to the continuity of life.
